Part 1 – Ready to Hop into English!

In the first part of this workshop, we will discuss what we ought to pay attention to in order to make our lessons lively and meaningful: tempo, organization, skills development and variety, among others. Then, we will analyze strategies to make the most of Hop into English, focusing on learners’ interests and needs, and aiming at gradual production through fun activities for each section in the book.
Part 2 – ESI Approaches to working with Hop into English 1, 2 and 3

Since the passing of the National Law No 26,150 (Ley Nacional de Educación Sexual Integral (ESI), 2006), and subsequent National Laws, such as the Comprehensive Protection to Prevent, Punish and Eradicate Violence against Women Law (2009), the Equal Marriage Law (2010), the Gender Identity Law (2012), the Promotion of School Life and the Approach of Conflict in Educational Institutions Law (2013), the Educate in Equality Law for the Prevention and Eradication of Gender Violence (2015), and the Mandatory Gender Training Law or Micaela Law (2019), the teaching of sexuality education from an integral and gender perspective, inclusive and respectful of human diversity, has introduced important changes and new challenges at all the levels and in all areas of the school curriculum – English included.
Thus, in the second part of this workshop, we invite teachers to look at the books Hop into English 1, 2 and 3 (Macmillan Education, 2017) with the ‘ESI glasses’ on. What contents of the books can be connected, expanded or used as springboards for the development of the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) curricular guidelines (Consejo Federal, 2008)? How can teachers approach and include CSE in the English lesson? We will share ideas, activities and complementary materials to make the most of within the national curricular guidelines.

Is a highly experienced teacher trainer who has lectured in Argentina as well as in neighbouring countries. Director of Studies at Santa Monica School of Languages, she has taught all levels both in private and state run schools. She is Macmillan’s Academic Coordinator and has authored several Teacher’s Books – For Winners 1–3, Switch On 1–3, and Phases 1–4, among others. At present, Alejandra is doing a degree in Educational Therapy.
MARÍA PAULA GRAVANO
Graduated as an English teacher from ISP Dr. Joaquín V. González. She also has a bachelor degree from Universidad Tecnológica Nacional. She teaches English in primary schools in Ciudad de Buenos Aires and didactics for early childhood and primary education at IES en Lenguas Vivas – Juan R. Fernández. She has been training academically in the use of ICT in the classroom, emotional intelligence and the production of didactic materials for the teaching of English as a foreign language. Currently, she is working in the elaboration of stories for children’s books in ELT with a focus on the contents described in the Ley Nacional Nº 26.150 – Programa Nacional para la Educación Sexual Integral (2006).
Graduated as an English teacher from IES en Lenguas Vivas ‘Juan Ramón Fernández’. She worked as a Teacher at Primary State Schools in CABA for more than 11 years. She was granted a Fulbright-Ministerio de Educación (CABA) scholarship twice. Currently, she is a Teacher of ‘Literatura Infantil y Juvenil’, ‘Residencia Pedagógica para los Niveles Inicial y Primaria’ and ‘Ayudantías y Prácticas de Enseñanza para los Niveles Inicial y Primario’ at IES en Lenguas Vivas – Juan R. Fernández, where she is also the English Primary Level Coordinator. She holds an Adscripción in ‘Literatura Infantil’ and postgraduate courses in Constructivism, in Children’s and Young Adult Cultures & Narratives and in Infancy & Education from FLACSO (Argentina).
